The Two Lights
Alaric von Nottgard is the King of Nottgard and Lord of the Wall, a position that grants him authority over the vast defensive line separating the civilized world from the horrors of Vildamannaland.
A devout follower of Vetr, Lord of the Night, Alaric embodies the harsh philosophy of the South—endurance, vigilance, and the understanding that survival often demands sacrifice. His rule is defined not by expansion, but by defense.
To his people, he is strength.
To the Empire, he is necessity.
To the Wall, he is its keeper.
Born on Nox 6, 49 AH, in the Nottgard Kingdom, Alaric von Nottgard stands as the iron sovereign of the South and the unyielding guardian of the Wall. Bearing titles such as King of Nottgard and Veggdrótt, he is both ruler and sentinel—charged not only with governing his people, but with holding back the darkness that lies beyond the known world.
Where others rule lands,
Alaric defends the edge of existence itself.
Alaric was born the second son of Erik von Nottgard and Tora of the Mountains, a child never expected to rule.
His early years were shaped by the brutal realities of the South—constant conflict, unforgiving climates, and the ever-present threat from beyond the Wall. His elder brother, Ragnar, was destined for the crown, allowing Alaric to grow in the shadow of expectation rather than beneath its weight.
That shadow would not last.
In 73 AH, the course of Alaric’s life changed irrevocably.
His father and brother fell in defense of the kingdom, leaving him as the last viable heir to the throne. Thrust into power, Alaric inherited not peace, but war—continuing the long and bitter conflict that had defined Nottgard’s relationship with its northern neighbor.
He took the crown not as a ruler prepared,
but as a survivor required.
From that moment, he became known as The Night-Watcher—a king who did not seek glory, but vigilance.
From 73 AH to 82 AH, Alaric ruled in a state of constant tension.
He continued the Century of Spite, leading his forces in relentless border conflicts while maintaining watch over the far greater threat beyond the Wall. To Alaric, the wars of men were distractions—necessary, but secondary to the true danger lurking in the wilds.
His kingdom stood not only as a nation,
but as a barrier.
The rise of Jalil Hazzan altered the balance of power.
After the fall of Auroreline and the expansion of imperial control, Nottgard found itself encircled—not conquered, but contained. Jalil, recognizing the limitations of his own forces in the harsh southern conditions and the growing threat beyond the Wall, offered Alaric a choice.
Not surrender.
Alliance
In Aestiva 6, 84 AH, Alaric accepted.
Nottgard became a vassal kingdom, but under unique terms:
Its people would remain devoted to Vetr
Its role as keepers of the Wall would be preserved
Its authority in matters of the Wall would remain supreme
Through this pact, Alaric secured both his kingdom’s survival and its purpose.
As Veggdrótt, Alaric commands the Wall and all who defend it.
His responsibilities include:
Leading the Verndari, the protectors of the Wall
Governing the castles and lands that support its defense
Overseeing all operations related to the threat beyond the Wall
His authority extends beyond his own kingdom. In matters concerning the Wall, his command surpasses all others save the highest imperial authority. Even within the broader structure of the Empire, his role remains singular.
He is not merely a king.
He is a shield.
By 96 AH, Alaric stands as a ruler defined by restraint and realism.
He has pledged loyalty to Emperor Jalil, yet he does not trust easily. To him, the doctrine of the Lord of Light is intrusive—too bright, too absolute, and blind to the deeper truths of the world.
The South does not worship light.
It endures the dark.
Alaric believes that those beyond his lands do not fully understand what lies past the Wall. While others focus on empire and expansion, he remains fixed on survival.
Alaric von Nottgard is stern, disciplined, and unyielding.
He does not speak unnecessarily, nor does he act without purpose. His leadership is defined by practicality—every decision measured against its impact on survival.
He values:
Strength above pride
Duty above ambition
Endurance above all
His faith in Vetr reflects this mindset. To him, the Night is not something to be feared—it is something to be understood, respected, and survived.
Alaric von Nottgard represents the final line between order and annihilation:
a ruler who does not seek to expand the world—only to protect what remains of it.
He is not a king of ambition.
He is a king of necessity.
If others build empires,
Alaric ensures there is still a world left to rule.
And in the silence of the frozen South,
where the Wall stands against the unknown,
it is his watch that determines
whether the light of civilization endures—
or is swallowed by the night beyond.
