The Two Lights
Rolf von Nottgard is the Lord Steward of the Wall—Veggstjóri—and the second-in-command of the Verndari, the ancient protectors of the South.
As brother to King Alaric and son of Erik “The Grim,” Rolf was forged in the same crucible of war and winter that shaped his bloodline. Yet his power does not lie in glory or legend.
It lies in function.
To the realm, he is not the sword.
He is the hand that ensures the sword never dulls.
Born on Maturis 26, 52 AH, in the harsh dominion of the South, Rolf von Nottgard was not raised to rule—but to endure.
Where kings command and warriors fight,
Rolf ensures that the Wall stands.
Born the third son of Erik von Nottgard and Tora of the Mountains, Rolf was never destined for the throne.
That absence of expectation became his strength.
While others were shaped by succession or sacrifice, Rolf was shaped by necessity—learning the systems, the structures, and the unseen labor that keeps a kingdom alive. He grew alongside Ragnar and Alaric in an age where survival depended not only on valor, but on endurance.
He did not need to lead the charge.
He needed to make sure the charge could happen at all.
Rolf’s rise came not through inheritance, but through replacement.
When Torsten von Nottgard could no longer serve as Veggstjóri, the burden of the Wall’s daily survival passed to Rolf. In accepting the role, he became the force that sustains the South’s greatest defense.
If the Lord of the Wall is the will,
then the Veggstjóri is the execution.
Rolf governs the machinery of the Verndari:
The flow of food across frozen supply lines
The maintenance and repair of Thunder-Steel fortifications
The rotation and discipline of the watch
The endurance of the castles that cling to the Wall
He does not inspire men with words.
He keeps them alive with systems.
Though he stands beneath his brother in rank, Rolf’s role is no less vital.
The Lord of the Wall defends the realm through command and vision.
Rolf ensures that such command can be carried out without collapse.
He is the keeper of balance:
Between scarcity and survival
Between order and decay
Between the living and the cold that waits beyond
In a land where failure means annihilation, there is no room for error.
And Rolf does not err.
Rolf is a devout follower of Vetr, Lord of the Night, like all of House Nottgard.
His faith is not expressed through mysticism or vision, but through discipline and duty. Where others look to the Night for meaning, Rolf looks to it for truth—a truth that demands resilience above all else.
The Night does not reward weakness.
And neither does he.
Rolf von Nottgard is not remembered in songs.
He does not stand at the front of battlefields, nor sit upon thrones of power. His name is spoken not in glory, but in reliance.
He is the man who ensures that the Wall does not fail.
In a world where legends are forged in fire and blood,
Rolf’s legacy is quieter—
built in stone,
carried in steel,
and measured in the simple truth that
the Wall still stands.
