The Two Lights
House Nottgard was forged in 84 BH by Lothar “The Iron-Clad,” a chieftain who rejected reliance on northern powers and instead united the southern tribes under a singular, uncompromising vision. At the mouth of Black Harbor, he declared that if the north wished to remain safe from the horrors beyond, it would pay for the shield that Nottgard would become. Under his rule, the foundations of Nachtfestung were laid, and Vetr worship was formalized as a defining cultural pillar—teaching that the Night was not an enemy, but a sacred cloak protecting those who stood watch against the darkness. With this philosophy, Lothar established the Nottgard Kingdom as a hardened frontier realm, built on endurance, sacrifice, and the unyielding duty to guard the world from what lay beyond.
Following Lothar’s reign, his successors carried forward the dual legacy of defense and survival. Gunther “The Wall-Builder” advanced the construction of the Great Wall, completing its first stone layer by 3 BH, solidifying Nottgard’s role as the bulwark against the Wild Ones. Yet the kingdom’s strength was constantly tested, not only by the threats beyond the Wall but by prolonged conflict with the Auroreline Kingdom in the north, including the War of the Silver Lilies, the War of the Broken Gates, and the drawn-out Century of Spite. Under Sigrid “The Winter Queen,” Nottgard repelled a major invasion of the Wild Ones to the south and endured the Siege of the Night, reinforcing its identity as a realm defined by resilience, isolation, and the relentless burden of guarding the boundary between civilization and annihilation.
In the later years, the mantle of leadership passed to figures such as Erik “The Grim” and ultimately Alaric “The Night-Watcher,” under whom the kingdom remained steadfast in its ancient duty. However, by 84 AH, the geopolitical landscape shifted with the rise of Jalil Hazzan and the Aurionic Empire. Recognizing the strategic necessity of controlling the Wall, Jalil claimed Nottgard as a vassal kingdom, bringing it into the imperial fold. Though this marked the end of Nottgard’s full sovereignty, House Nottgard retained its essential purpose within the empire—as the guardians of the southern boundary, bound by oath and tradition to stand vigilant in the dark, ensuring that the Night remained a shield rather than a harbinger of ruin.
