Davin Solenne,

Grand Maester

Keeper of the Midnight Quill • Voice of the Aurionic Lyceum

Overview

Davin Solenne serves as Grand Maester, the Emperor’s chief advisor on history, science, and the deeper truths of the world.

A product of Auroreline refinement and Ichnusan scholarship, he represents a rare fusion of culture and intellect. His presence on the Small Council marks the Empire’s acknowledgment that knowledge—both sacred and forbidden—is as vital as war, law, or coin.

To the court, he is wisdom.

To the Archive, he is preservation.

To the Empire, he is a necessary contradiction.

Biography

Birth and Lineage

Born on Sarab 2, 26 AH, in the Auroreline Kingdom, Davin Solenne stands as one of the most learned and enigmatic figures within the Aurionic Empire. Bearing titles such as Keeper of the Midnight Quill and Voice of the Aurionic Lyceum, he is both scholar and strategist—guardian of knowledge in an age where truth itself has become dangerous.

Where others wield power through sword or crown,

Davin wields it through understanding.

Early Life

Davin was born into the elegance of Auroreline during a time of intellectual flourishing.

The alliance between his homeland and the Archive of Ichnusa had ushered in a golden age of scholarship, where philosophy, science, and faith coexisted in delicate balance. Raised in this environment, Davin developed an early affinity for learning—drawn not only to what was known, but to what remained hidden.

At the age of fourteen, he left behind the comforts of noble life to join the Archive.

There, under the silent watch of Sutir, the Silent Scribe, he began a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

The Scholar of Hidden Truths

Within the Archive of Ichnusa, Davin distinguished himself through relentless curiosity and intellectual discipline.

By 56 AH, he had earned the title of Maester, granting him the freedom to conduct independent study. It was during this period that he began to collect what would later be known as the Shadow Memories—fragments of truth deemed too dangerous, too ancient, or too disruptive to be widely known.

These included:

  • The deeper truths surrounding Aurah, the Lady of the Dawn

  • The existence and implications of gifted abilities

  • The ancient and hostile forces dwelling in the southern wilds of Vildamannaland

While others pursued accepted knowledge, Davin pursued complete knowledge.

And in doing so, he stepped into territory few dared to explore.

Grand Maester of Ichnusa

In 76 AH, Davin was elevated to the rank of Grand Maester.

From this position, he sought to preserve the Archive as an independent sanctuary of truth in a world increasingly defined by conflict and consolidation. As kingdoms clashed and ideologies hardened, Davin stood as a quiet defender of intellectual freedom.

Yet even he could see what was coming.

The rise of Jalil Hazzan signaled not just political change—but the potential rewriting of truth itself.

The Fall of Auroreline and the Choice

In 79 AH, Davin’s path intersected directly with the royal family when he was asked to send one of his Maesters to tutor Juliette Beauregard.

Through this role of oversight, he witnessed both the brilliance of Auroreline’s culture and the growing shadow of its inevitable fall. When Jalil conquered the kingdom in 82 AH, Davin prepared for the destruction of the Archive, believing that the Emperor’s doctrine of the Blinding Truth would not tolerate competing knowledge.

He was wrong.

In 83 AH, Jalil arrived at Ichnusa not as a destroyer, but as a reformer.

He offered Davin a choice:

See the Archive dismantled

Or transform it into the Aurionic Lyceum, an imperial institution

In exchange, Davin would take a seat on the Small Council.

Davin accepted.

Not out of loyalty—

but out of necessity.

The Grand Maester of the Empire

As Grand Maester, Davin serves as both advisor and guardian of knowledge within the Aurionic Empire.

His responsibilities include:

  • Advising the Emperor on matters of history, science, and medicine

  • Serving as the personal maester of the Palace of the Two Lights

  • Leading the Small Council in the absence of the Hand

  • Overseeing the Aurionic Lyceum and its scholars

Yet beneath his official duties lies a deeper purpose.

He preserves.

The Silent Scribe

Davin’s greatest role is one unseen by most.

Within the heart of the Empire, he safeguards the very knowledge that could undermine it. The Shadow Memories remain hidden within the Lyceum, protected not by distance, but by proximity—concealed within the system that would otherwise seek to erase them.

To the court, he is a loyal scholar.

In truth, he is a keeper of dangerous truths.

Position within the Court

Davin occupies a unique position within the Small Council.

He is neither a servant of tradition nor an agent of conquest. Instead, he stands apart—respected for his wisdom, yet never fully aligned with the ideological rigidity of the Empire.

His strongest connection within the court is with Juliette Beauregard, whose past he shares and whose cultural preservation mirrors his own mission of safeguarding truth.

Together, they represent a quieter resistance—one rooted not in rebellion, but in remembrance.

Personality and Beliefs

Davin Solenne is thoughtful, measured, and deeply introspective.

He does not rush to judgment, nor does he speak without purpose. His strength lies in his ability to see beyond the present—to understand the long arc of history and the consequences of knowledge suppressed or revealed.

He values:

  • Truth above comfort

  • Preservation above destruction

  • Understanding above control

His faith is divided yet harmonious—honoring both Aurion, the Lord of the Light, and Sutir, the Silent Scribe. To him, light reveals—but silence preserves.

Both are necessary.

Legacy

Davin Solenne represents a truth often overlooked by empires:

Knowledge cannot be conquered—only hidden, preserved, or forgotten.

He is the Empire’s greatest scholar, and perhaps its greatest risk.

If Jalil Hazzan builds the Empire,

Ermias al-Karim governs it,

and Turazedek Malchior enforces its laws—

then Davin Solenne remembers what came before it.

And in a world shaped by power,

it is often memory—

not strength—

that determines what survives in the end.
