Titles & Ranks in the Aurionic Empire

Structure of Authority

The Aurionic Empire operates under a highly structured system of titles and ranks, where authority flows downward from the Throne of the Sun through clearly defined tiers of power. These titles are not merely honorific—they determine political influence, legal authority, and social standing. Each rank reflects proximity to the divine authority of Aurion, as embodied by the Emperor.

The hierarchy is rigid by design, ensuring clarity of command and preventing disputes over precedence. While individuals may rise within the system, the structure itself remains fixed, reinforcing the Empire’s commitment to order.

Imperial Ranks

At the highest level of authority stand the rulers of the Empire and their immediate bloodline.

  • Emperor and Empress – The sovereign rulers of the entire Empire, holding absolute authority both politically and divinely.

  • Exarch and Exarchess – Siblings of the Emperor appointed to rule entire kingdoms on his behalf. This title is a recent creation, intended to extend imperial blood directly into regional governance.

  • Golden Grand Prince – The designated heir to the imperial throne, bearing both political and symbolic significance as the future embodiment of imperial rule.

  • Grand Prince and Grand Princess – The biological children of the Emperor, along with their spouses upon marriage, forming the extended imperial lineage.

  • Golden Prism-Princess – The betrothed of the imperial heir, a title that signifies both union and political alignment at the highest level of succession.

  • Lumine and Lumina – The children of an Exarch or Exarchess, representing the next generation of imperial authority within regional domains.

These titles form the core of imperial identity, where bloodline and governance are inseparable.

Royal and High Governance Ranks

Beneath the imperial family are those who govern the Empire’s constituent kingdoms and serve within its highest administrative structures.

  • The Small Council of the Emperor – The Empire’s highest governing body, consisting of:

    • Hand of the Emperor

    • Master of War

    • Master of Coin

    • Master of Whisperers

    • Master of Laws

    • Master of Ships

    • Lord Commander of the Sun Guard

    • Grand Maester

  • King and Queen – The rulers of vassal kingdoms, governing their lands under the authority of the Emperor.

  • Regent – An appointed ruler overseeing a kingdom fully assimilated into the Empire, acting directly on behalf of imperial authority.

  • Prism-Princess – The daughters of kings or queens who are betrothed to members of the imperial line, serving as living bonds between houses.

  • Prince and Princess – Younger children of royal houses who are not currently bound through imperial betrothal.

These roles represent the operational core of governance, translating imperial will into action across the realm.

  • Marquess and Marchioness

  • Earl / Count and Countess

  • Viscount and Viscountess

  • Baron and Baroness

  • Baronet and Baronetess

Inheritance, Appointment, and Advancement

Titles within the Empire are acquired through three primary means: inheritance, appointment, and merit.

Imperial titles—such as Prince or Princess—are restricted to bloodline or marriage into the ruling family. These ranks cannot be earned through service alone. By contrast, noble titles from Duke downward may be granted to individuals who demonstrate exceptional ability, loyalty, or achievement.

Such grants are formalized through Letters Patent, official declarations issued by a Regent or higher authority, publicly recognizing the elevation of an individual into the noble class. Military distinction, economic influence, and political service are among the most common paths to advancement.

Despite this flexibility, upward mobility remains rare, as recognition requires the attention and approval of those already in power.

Limitations of Rank

Within the Aurionic system, an individual may not hold multiple competing titles. The highest-ranking title always supersedes all others, ensuring clarity of authority and preventing conflicts of command.

This principle reinforces the hierarchy’s rigidity, maintaining a clear chain of power at all times.

Religious Titles and Political Power

Unlike most religious institutions, the Order of the Zenith holds direct political influence within the Empire. Its hierarchy operates alongside the secular structure, with certain titles carrying both spiritual and administrative authority.

  • Imperial Priest – The supreme head of the Order, second only to the Emperor in authority.

  • Arch-Reactors – Members of the Celestial High Council, responsible for electing the Imperial Priest.

  • Zenith Exarch – The highest-ranking religious authority within a kingdom, serving as the face of the Order at the regional level.

  • Solar Warden – Oversees large territories, ensuring spiritual alignment across multiple provinces.

  • Lumen Overseer – Governs individual dioceses, focusing on the spiritual health of cities and regions.

  • Venerated Catalyst – An honorary title granted to priests who have inspired significant spiritual transformation.

  • Zenith Alchemist – Local parish leaders responsible for conducting rites and maintaining daily worship.

  • Acolyte of the Flux – Initiates and assistants who support the Order’s functions but do not yet hold full authority.

This structure ensures that religious doctrine remains deeply integrated into the governance of the Empire.

Uniformity Across the Empire

All kingdoms within the Aurionic Empire adhere to this unified system of titles and ranks. While cultural differences may influence how authority is expressed, the structure itself remains consistent, reinforcing imperial cohesion and preventing fragmentation.

Granting and Stripping of Titles

The authority to grant or revoke titles rests exclusively with those of Regent rank or higher. Titles may be awarded to recognize loyalty, talent, or service, often elevating individuals from lower classes into positions of influence.

Conversely, titles may be stripped as punishment for severe offenses. Acts such as treason, criminal behavior, failure to produce an heir, financial collapse, excommunication, or being reduced to bondservice can result in the loss of rank and status.

In all cases, titles are not permanent—they are conditional, existing only so long as they align with the expectations of the Empire.

The Weight of Rank

In the Aurionic Empire, a title is more than a designation—it is a declaration of place within the divine and political order. It defines who commands, who serves, and who is remembered.

For to hold a title is to carry authority.

And to lose it is to lose everything that authority once protected.
