Punishments & Trials in the Aurionic Empire

The Purpose of Punishment

Within the Aurionic Empire, punishment is not merely corrective—it is preservative. The justice system exists to maintain order, protect the sanctity of the Covenant of Light, and reinforce the authority of the Crown. Crime is viewed not only as an offense against individuals, but as a disruption of the divine structure established under Aurion.

As such, punishment is designed to restore balance, deter disorder, and, when necessary, remove corruption from the body of the Empire entirely.

Forms of Punishment

The Empire recognizes several primary forms of punishment, each applied based on the severity and nature of the crime:

  • Fines – Financial penalties imposed for lesser offenses, often tied to trade violations or minor breaches of law.

  • Imprisonment – Confinement for crimes requiring containment rather than immediate removal.

  • Exile – Forced banishment, most notably to Vildamannaland, a land beyond the boundaries of civilization where survival is uncertain.

  • Execution – The ultimate punishment, reserved for crimes that threaten the structure of the Empire or the sanctity of its laws.

  • Bondservice – A condition in which the offender becomes property of the Crown, compelled to labor in service of the Empire or leased to private parties.

Each form reflects a different philosophy of justice—penalty, containment, removal, elimination, or utilization.

Crimes of Bondservice

Bondservice is among the most complex punishments within the Empire, reserved for crimes that are severe, yet not deemed worthy of immediate execution. Those condemned to this fate are stripped of autonomy and converted into labor for the Crown.

Crimes that may result in bondservice include:

  • Systemic tax evasion

  • Forgery of imperial coin

  • Manslaughter without malice

  • Grand larceny

  • Isotopic treason

  • Abandonment of filial duty

  • Abandonment of parental duty

  • Heretical proximity, including the sheltering of heretics or excommunicated individuals

These offenses are seen as corrosive rather than explosive—damaging the structure of society over time rather than shattering it outright. Bondservice, therefore, transforms the offender into a resource, repaying their debt through labor.

Equality Before the Law

One of the defining principles of the Aurionic justice system is its strict application across all social classes. No individual—whether commoner, noble, royal, or imperial—is considered above the law. The Emperor’s authority is absolute, and all are equally subject to the Covenant of Light.

This principle serves both as a moral declaration and a political tool, reinforcing the legitimacy of the system by ensuring that power does not exempt one from consequence.

Judicial Process

The Empire does not rely on elaborate or performative trials. Instead, justice is administered through private hearings conducted by authorized officials. These hearings may be overseen by magistrates, members of the royal family, or, in rare cases, the imperial family itself.

Evidence such as witness testimony and confession may be considered, but ultimate judgment rests on the discretion of the presiding authority. The absence of public trial ensures that justice remains controlled, deliberate, and aligned with imperial order rather than public sentiment.

Sentencing is typically delivered by the ranking magistrate within the region, unless a higher authority intervenes.

Public Execution

While trials are conducted in private, executions are deliberately made public. The condemned are placed upon Solar Spires—elevated structures where their bodies are exposed to the sun and sky until only bone remains.

This method serves both as punishment and proclamation. It reinforces the belief that those who violate the Covenant are unworthy of the protection of the light, and that their return to it is not one of honor, but of judgment.

Execution is not hidden.

It is witnessed.

Mercy and Alternative Sentences

Though the system is severe, limited avenues for mercy exist. In cases where a crime does not threaten the foundational order of the Empire, alternative punishments may be granted.

These include:

  • Exile – Allowing the individual to live beyond the Empire’s reach, removed rather than destroyed

  • Service to the Order of the Zenith – A life of enforced devotion, where the individual seeks redemption through obedience and labor

Such alternatives are rare and carefully considered. Those whose crimes are deemed too dangerous are not offered mercy, but eradicated—viewed as a disease that must be cut from the body of society.

Corruption and Its Consequences

The Aurionic Empire maintains a zero-tolerance stance toward corruption within its justice system. Attempts to manipulate or circumvent punishment—particularly through bribery—are treated as severe offenses.

In the early days of the Empire, instances of officials accepting payment to alter judgment were met with immediate and decisive response. In one notable case, a magistrate who accepted such a bribe was executed by direct order of the Emperor, establishing a precedent that justice itself must remain incorruptible.

In this system, even those who enforce the law are not beyond it.

The Philosophy of Judgment

Justice in the Aurionic Empire is not concerned with forgiveness—it is concerned with preservation. The system does not seek to understand the individual, but to protect the whole. Crimes are measured not only by their immediate impact, but by the threat they pose to the structure of the Empire.

Those who can be corrected are controlled.

Those who can be used are bound.

And those who cannot be trusted to exist within the system…

Are removed from it.

The Light of Judgment

In the Aurionic Empire, punishment is not merely the consequence of crime—it is the reaffirmation of order. Each sentence, each execution, and each act of enforcement serves as a reminder that the law is ever-present, and that no shadow exists beyond its reach.

For in the Empire, justice is not blind.

It sees clearly—

and it does not look away.
